Helping to address depression and anxiety in junior medical officers.

Due to high levels of pressure and responsibility, Depression and anxiety is more common in young doctors than in the general public. The Blackdog institute approached us to design an app that could be used as a first step in addressing this issue.

Young, smart, skeptical.

To understand what these JMO’s might respond to, we needed to get a picture of who they are and what their lives are like. Through anonymised interviewing we learned about their schedules and work / life balance, as well as what other apps they use.

They have very little spare time.

A key takeaway is that our audience is time poor, and consistent routine can be difficult to maintain. Our challenge was to come up with user flows that respected that and could work around them.

Look and feel

We presented a few design approaches to a panel of doctors in training to get their feedback. They preferred design approaches that were more lively and human than serious and prescriptive, which was great reminder that this app is for predominantly young people. We gauged naming ideas with them, and then send out a follow up survey to a broader group to help validate the conclusions made from the more intimate sessions.

Rollout.

The app ended up being a large multimedia content piece. We facilitated the build process by designing page structures that could be easily built which helped the Blackdog development team to create the app’s many modules as efficiently as possible.
